Athlete safety & staff screeningWho is screened?
All SCC staff, including coaches and photographers, undergo Live Scan background checks through the California Department of Justice.
Please note: Having a criminal record does not automatically mean someone cannot coach. SCC reviews each situation individually, considering the nature and circumstances of past conduct and whether it could affect the safety and well-being of athletes today. All participation decisions remain subject to applicable eligibility requirements.
Understanding team feesWhy are team fees set the way they are?
Team fees help cover the real costs of running a youth sports program. All teams in our conference pay for practice fields and game fields—no SCC team receives free fields. Teams must also pay for referees and medics on game days.
Insurance is another necessary expense. Teams using Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) facilities must provide proof of insurance, and athletic activities can require $5 million in liability coverage. The cost of that coverage—not the $5 million coverage limit itself—must be included in the team’s operating budget.
Field rentals and insurance costs have to be funded, and team fees help pay those expenses so athletes have places to practice and compete. Costs can differ by location and facility, which can affect what each team charges.
Getting started
How much does it cost to start a team?
Based on SCC’s experience over the years, we recommend having at least $10,000 in the team’s bank account before launching a program. Programs that begin without this financial foundation have often struggled to cover expenses and follow through on commitments to athletes and families.
These startup funds help cover practice and game fields, uniforms, insurance, and other essential expenses. Having money available before the season begins helps a team meet its obligations instead of relying entirely on future registration fees or fundraising.
The $10,000 is a recommended starting reserve, not a complete season budget or a guarantee that every expense will be covered. Actual costs depend on the size of the program and local expenses.
Do coaches get paid?
No. SCC coaches are volunteers.
